What every AI engine says about your brand

Each AI engine reads a different copy of the web.

ChatGPT reads Bing, Gemini reads Google, Claude reads Brave, and Perplexity reads its own. Each one rewards a different kind of proof. The same page can convince one and give the other three nothing to use. Cast Iron LA built Stage30 to ask the engines on its panel and show you what each one said.

What each one wants, and who has to do the work

What each engine reads, and what it wants

Two of these you can satisfy from your own keyboard this week. Two of them need somebody else to write something first.

ChatGPT

reads Bing · OAI-SearchBot

It cites

A claim it has seen on many sites that are not yours

Where the work is Off your siteYou cannot write your way to this one
Effort
Do this

Get the same claim onto Wikipedia, Wikidata and real coverage. Your own pages do not count as a source here.

Moves when Bing re-indexes, and only after the outside record changes

Gemini

reads Google · Googlebot

It cites

A fact it can confirm in a second place

Where the work is Your site and beyondBoth halves, and neither is fast
Effort
Do this

Put the identical fact on your page, your profiles and your schema. Then wait, because Google's opinion of your domain is years old.

Slowest of the four. It arrives already holding a view of you

Perplexity

reads its own index · PerplexityBot

It cites

A sentence it can quote and credit to you

Where the work is One line on your pageNobody else is involved
Effort
Do this

Write one quotable sentence with your name inside it. This can be live today and read tomorrow.

Fastest. Its own crawler, its own index, no queue

Claude

reads Brave · ClaudeBot trains, separate agents fetch

It cites

A question with its answer directly underneath

Where the work is One block on your pageA shape, not a rewrite
Effort
Do this

Publish the questions your buyers actually ask, each with the answer under it. Unanswered reads as unfinished.

Moves on work you can finish this week

Crawler and index attribution checked 20 August 2026 against the vendors’ own documentation. Google-Extended has no user agent and never requests a page. Googlebot crawls for Gemini and AI Overviews, and Google-Extended is the robots.txt setting governing whether that crawl may be used for AI. It does not affect your ranking in Google Search.

Questions

What people ask us about the engines.

Why do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude give different answers about the same brand?

Each engine reads a different copy of the web. ChatGPT reads Bing, Gemini reads Google, Claude reads Brave, and Perplexity reads its own index. No two of these four hold the same copy, so one question about a brand can come back four different ways on the same afternoon. Sometimes they agree, and that agreement is a signal worth having.

Which AI engine do most people use?

ChatGPT, by a distance. It took almost 80% of worldwide AI chatbot traffic in July 2026, measured by Statcounter Global Stats. Gemini took almost 10%, Perplexity 6%, Claude 3% and Microsoft Copilot 3%. The figures to the decimal are printed with the share bar above.

Does ChatGPT use Google search results?

No. ChatGPT gets its search results from Bing, and so does Microsoft Copilot. Together they took over 80% of worldwide AI chatbot traffic in July 2026, so one piece of indexing work at Bing reaches both.

Is Google-Extended a crawler?

No. Google-Extended has no user agent of its own and never requests a page. Googlebot does the crawling, and Google-Extended is a robots.txt product token controlling whether that crawl may be used for Gemini and other Google AI products. Google states it does not affect a site's inclusion or ranking in Google Search. This matters practically: blocking Googlebot to stay out of AI takes you out of Google Search with it, and Google-Extended is the control that separates the two.

Which AI crawlers visit my website?

OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and GPTBot separately for OpenAI model training. PerplexityBot for Perplexity. For Claude, ClaudeBot crawls to train the model and Anthropic lists its user-directed and search agents separately, so ClaudeBot is not the one deciding whether you appear in an answer. For Gemini it is Googlebot. Blocking the wrong one is the expensive mistake: blocking GPTBot keeps you out of training and leaves you findable, while blocking OAI-SearchBot makes you unfindable in the largest AI engine there is.

Which AI engine is easiest to get cited by?

Perplexity. It crawls with its own bot into its own index, so you are not waiting on another company, and it cites a sentence it can quote and credit. Gemini is the slowest to move, because it starts from the opinion Google has built about your domain over years.

Shares: ChatGPT 77.92%, Gemini 9.9%, Perplexity 5.88%, Claude 3.19%, Copilot 3.07% of worldwide AI chatbot page views, July 2026, Statcounter Global Stats. Bing reach is the sum of the ChatGPT and Copilot shares.
